Steve Maltby, Commercial Manager for Mitie's painting business was awarded the John Prior Award in September 2013 for Outstanding Achievement in Painting & Decorating from Dennis Pollard.
Steve received this award for his commitment to apprentices and trainees; for taking on 45 apprentices over his 15 years in management for Mitie with as many as 40 of them still employed this day. The majority of these apprentices are now fully qualified painters and decorators, some are still in training but two of them have been recognised with further potential and are currently working as junior surveyors.
Steve’s own journey started as an apprentice painter, affording him full appreciation of what the young students of today go through, moving onto become fully qualified painter Steve was then recognised by Mitie for his talents and promoted to a management role. In 1998 Steve took on his current position as Commercial Manager running the East Midlands Region.
Steve has built the business up over the last 15 years increasing turnover from £3million to £8million per annum.
Dennis Pollard, Director of CTS Ltd stated: “Steve Maltby is one of the outstanding champions of our industry – he has made the difference that we need to professionalise our apprentices and develop the professional image that our craft needs to meet the challenges of the future. He has maintained a commitment to apprenticeships at Mitie at a time when it is easier to overlook the importance of the next generation of decorators. He has built into the company fabric a philosophy of ensuring apprentices are a key part of the organisation’s mission statement and he is setting a standard for other companies to follow. He is one of our industry’s individuals that are ‘making a difference’ – he is an ambassador for our trade and for his company and he is a very worthy recipient of this very special award”.
