Mitie wins national RoSPA award

Mitie has been awarded the prestigious Gold Medal Award for the 2012 RoSPA Occupational Health & Safety Awards.

Mitie, the FTSE 250 strategic outsourcing and energy services company, has been awarded the prestigious Gold Medal Award for the 2012 national Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Occupational Health & Safety Awards.

This is the fifth consecutive year that Mitie’s Facilities Management business has won the Gold Awards, resulting in the presentation of the Gold Medal Award on 17 May 2012 at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel, at the National Exhibition Centre.

The award has been given to Mitie for its approach to the prevention of accidents and ill health, recognising its achievements in demonstrating outstanding risk control.

The awards do not just look at accident records, but also the entrants’ overarching health and safety management systems, including important practices such as strong leadership and workforce involvement.

Mitie has developed the ‘Work Safe, Home Safe’ communications campaign, designed to raise awareness of health & safety issues for all employees and managers.

The business’ innovative approach to staff communication has ensured more employees are aware of health & safety procedures, thereby lessening the risk of accidents.

Over the last five years, Mitie has seen a significant drop in its number of accidents.

The business aims to continue this trend with an annual target of reducing its accident rate by 10%, and targeting problematic areas such as ‘slips and trips’, which is one of the largest health & safety issues across most industries.

Jeff Hilton, head of Quality, Health, Safety & Environment (QHSE) at Mitie said:

“By actively involving the workforce and ensuring health & safety is part and parcel of their day-to-day work, the business is able to develop pragmatic and effective solutions to health & safety issues.

“We are constantly thinking of new and innovative ways of working to help reduce the number of accidents, for example, by access to the right equipment and advanced cleaning systems.”

David Rawlins, awards manager at RoSPA, said:

“The RoSPA Awards programme provides well-deserved recognition for the winners and spurs on other organisations to raise their standards of accident and ill health prevention.

“We congratulate Mitie Facilities Management on its success and encourage it, and all our other winners, to remain committed to safety and health, an approach that is well recognised to be good for workers and the bottom line.”
