MITIE wins multi million pound contract for Cambridge University.

MITIE has been awarded an £11m contract to provide mechanical, electrical, public health and specialist services for a new 10,000m2 building for the Department of Materials, Science and Metallurgy in Cambridge.

The project involves the construction of a number of specialist laboratory facilities including an electron microscopy suite.

MITIE, specialists in energy efficiency and sustainability, has designed a mixed ventilation system to maximise the use of natural ventilation supplemented by mechanical cooling.

An open loop cooling system will recycle water throughout the building and rainwater will be harvested for irrigation and WCs.

Over 200m2 of photovoltaic panels will generate the electrical equivalent of 23kW, yielding savings of 9800 kg CO2 emissions per year.

The entire plant room will be built off-site at MITIE’s specialist workshop in Exeter, speeding up delivery time and ensuring quality control.

Bill Robson, Managing Director of MITIE’s Property Management business, said: “This latest project at Cambridge University is a big win and we’re committed to a timely delivery, adding value and energy savings for Cambridge University and our partners”

The target for the building is to attain a BREEAM “Excellent” and an Energy Performance Certificate rating of “B”

The design and installation project, on behalf of Willmott Dixon Construction will be completed in February 2013.
