Mitie, the facilities management company, has been announced as a winner at the South West National Apprenticeship Awards 2016 regional ceremony.

The awards, now in their thirteenth year, are run by the National Apprenticeship Service and recognise excellence in two areas: businesses that grow their own talent with apprentices and apprentices who have made a significant contribution to their workplaces.

Mitie picked up the EON Award for Macro Employer of the Year for its contribution to apprenticeships. The business currently employs over 2000 apprentices working across 39 different apprenticeship frameworks, including quantity surveying, plumbing and joinery.

On winning, Barry Norris, Training Director at Mitie said: “It’s extremely satisfying to have our many years of commitment to developing and expanding our apprenticeship programmes recognised. The Award is testament to the hard work and dedication of our many managers across the business who support our apprentices so magnificently and, of course, to the apprentices themselves.

“We now have much evidence to show the benefits apprenticeships bring to our people, not merely in terms of high skill levels and self-confidence but also in the career development opportunities delivered. Apprenticeships also strengthen our culture, improve engagement and ultimately lead to improving the quality of service we provide to our customers. We are already planning significant expansion of our apprenticeship numbers over the next couple of years because in simple terms, it makes sound business sense!”

Sue Husband, Director of the National Apprenticeship Service, said: “The National Apprenticeship Awards enable exceptional apprentices and dedicated employers to receive the recognition they richly deserve. Apprenticeships enable people to gain the skills and knowledge they need to succeed - in some cases up to degree level; and for businesses to grow the talent they need.

Mitie has won the South West Regional Apprenticeship Award and I would like to congratulate them on their achievement. Winning this award is greatly deserved. There has never been a better time to become an apprentice or employ one.”
