Mitie has welcomed 41 new apprentices to its Technical Services Apprenticeship Programme, its initiative to attract and develop the next generation of engineers and ensure Mitie has the talent and expertise to continue supporting its customers for years to come. These apprentices, who joined Mitie in August and September 2021, are in addition to 18 other apprentices which started the Programme earlier this year. This new intake of colleagues takes Mitie past its target of hiring 50 new apprentices in its Technical Services business in 2021.
As part of their training, each new colleague will complete a technical apprenticeship, such as maintenance and operations engineering, carpentry and joinery, or electrical engineering, to help them kickstart their careers in the facilities management industry. The apprenticeships will last between two and four years, with colleagues combining their studies, which will take place at the UK colleges that Mitie has partnered with, with on-the-job training at Mitie clients’ sites, including shadowing engineering experts.
Once they have successfully completed the programme and received their qualifications, all apprentices will be able to continue their career at Mitie as part of the business’ future core talent. With diversity and inclusion a priority for Mitie, the company has focused on ensuring that its new colleagues are a mixture of ages and come from a range of different backgrounds. Having colleagues from all walks all life will not only allow recruits to learn new skills or retrain, it will also promote diversity and inclusion, helping Mitie bring fresh ideas and perspectives into the business.
The Apprenticeship Programme is part of Mitie’s Technical Services Academy, a programme to offer development opportunities, including formal training and mentorship, to help colleagues build the range of skills they need to progress to the next stage of their careers. From technical courses and qualifications for employees to upskill, through to training for colleagues wanting to transition to an operational management role, the Academy consists of four elements – Early Careers, Supervisor Essentials, Tech X and Career Pathways – to support colleagues at every stage of their career.
Carlo Alloni, Managing Director, Technical Services, Mitie, said:
