Mitie, the UK’s leading facilities management and professional services company, is supporting the British Coronavirus effort by providing cleaning, catering, portering, security and waste management services for the NHS Ysbyty Calon y Ddraig in Cardiff. The field hospital – Dragon’s Heart, as it is known in English – opened with a capacity of 300 patients on Sunday 12 April 2020 at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium. At full capacity it could accommodate up to 2,000 beds for patients, making it the UK’s second largest temporary hospital. We all hope this capacity is not realised; however, it is ready as a precaution against COVID-19.
Over 200 Mitie employees are already based at the Hospital, with the possibility of ramping up many more depending on latest clinical advice and spread of COVID-19 across Wales and the rest of the UK. Mitie is harnessing its extensive experience in both healthcare facilities management and clinical waste management to ensure that these crucial services are running efficiently, 24/7. With a very tight time frame to get the Dragon’s Heart Hospital open for patients, Mitie teams worked around-the-clock to prepare the site and mobilise 200 employees in just five days.
In addition to supporting Dragon’s Heart Hospital, Mitie also provides critical maintenance services for NHS Nightingale London based at the ExCel Centre. This includes ensuring that all power, water, heating and lighting is kept in full working order, in addition to waste management.
Providing services for the new field hospitals is just one example of how Mitie is supporting the nation during the Coronavirus pandemic. Mitie employees, such as cleaners, security officers and engineers, are based at hundreds of sites critical to keeping the UK moving – including hospitals, supermarkets, nuclear facilities, transport hubs, government locations, telephony infrastructure, data centres and financial institutions, to name just a few.
