The aviation security business of Mitie, the strategic outsourcing and energy services company, has been awarded a two year contract to provide security at Birmingham Airport.

Birmingham Airport requires a security operation to safeguard the security and integrity of the facility in support of the Airport Company, the airlines, tour operators, tenants, handling agencies and the passengers and other customers. Birmingham airport is one of the UK’s foremost international airports and is home to 50 airlines flying to over 140 direct global destinations.

The contract will see Mitie controlling airside access at the staff gates, immigration gates at the UK Border, airside vehicular access control, and airside patrols. Additional duties will also be covered when needed such as resource for passenger search, aircraft and building search, airside escort duties for VIPs and emergency vehicles, and managing building evacuations, bomb threat and other emergency procedures.

The aviation security team was chosen following a competitive tender process. The award was based on Mitie’s detailed understanding of key security risks associated with the aviation industry.

Commenting on the contract award, Tony Medhurst, Managing Director of Mitie’s aviation and transport security business said:

“We’re delighted to be providing security services to Birmingham Airport. Our experience in the aviation and transport industry makes us the perfect partner for the Airport. ”

David Winstanley, Operations Director, Birmingham Airport, said:

“Mitie clearly has experience at airports around the country and we look forward to working with the team to provide security services for Birmingham.”
