MITIE SAVES TAXPAYERS MONEY AND CUTS C02 THROUGH CARBON REDUCTION INITIATIVE

The Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) and London Fire Brigade (LFB) are significantly cutting their carbon footprints and saving tens of thousands of pounds a year thanks to MITIE, the UK’s leading strategic outsourcing company.

MITIE has a ten year contract to reduce carbon emissions at ten LFB buildings and ten MPS buildings, using elements of its CarbonCare service, as part of London’s C02 reduction commitments.

By implementing energy saving programmes including installing motion-sensor lighting, energy efficient boilers and solar panels that generate electricity, the MITIE technical facilities management team has already achieved significant savings.

At one fire station, in Ilford, the installations have resulted in gas and electricity consumption falling by 41%. Overall, the ten participating stations have saved 242 tonnes of carbon dioxide resulting in £50,000 worth of savings.

The contract, worth £2.4m to MITIE, is part of the London RE-FIT scheme, formerly known as the Building Energy Efficiency Programme, and awarded by the Mayor of London. Its purpose is to assist public bodies in London to significantly reduce carbon emissions from their buildings, with a target of 60% reductions by 2025.

MITIE’s CarbonCare offering encompasses all the services MITIE provides to help clients reduce their carbon emissions and save money. This includes identifying waste, providing the right equipment to reduce it and complying with an increasingly complex legislative environment.

Mike Sewell, CarbonCare director of MITIE, said: “These are significant savings in both financial and environmental terms which prove MITIE’s CarbonCare offering is having a hugely beneficial impact on its clients.

“By bringing everything together in one place, from strategy, to delivery, to longterm performance improvement CarbonCare is able to make meaningful savings to any business.

“With the recession demanding greater efficiencies from the public and private sector an offering such as CarbonCare is proving to be very popular because of the monetary benefits it has on the bottom line as well as environmental benefits.

“As an integral part of CarbonCare we also provide our clients with advice and direction surrounding compliance with legislative change such as the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme. Combined with the practical strategies we implement to reduce waste clients really value our CarbonCare service because it is so comprehensive.”

Ian Shaw, energy manager for London Fire Brigade, said: “Everyone is a winner because of this work, as we do our bit for the environment and our bank balance. The money we save is re-invested in more green technology which will lead to an even lower carbon footprint and further savings.”
