Mitie’s Lean Academy celebrates one year anniversary

Mitie is celebrating the first anniversary of its Lean Six Sigma programme, which has helped to revolutionise the way cleaning services are delivered.

Mitie’s Lean Academy gives employees the necessary training to deliver lean cleaning via a web-based programme which helps calculate and design the most efficient cleaning processes for a specific building, saving time, money and resources.

Both the IT software (Lean IT) and the Lean Academy are exclusive to Mitie and the first of their kind within the facilities management sector.

Over 150 Mitie employees have gained accredited qualifications, with a further 43 still in training.

The process starts with a site assessment, looking at the square footage to be cleaned, the time it takes and the number of people employed. Mitie’s IT software then designs a process exactly matched to the site, ensuring a high level of quality and efficiency.

Training is accredited by the National College Open Network, with the majority of the learning done online at a pace to suit individual managers.

David Johnson, MD of Mitie's Environmental + business, which employs over 25,000 employees in many blue chip organisations across the UK, said: “Since investing in Lean IT and our Lean Academy, there is no doubt that we have been able to dramatically improve way in which our cleaning services are delivered.”

“It’s fantastic to see so many employees get their yellow and green belt accreditations in just one year after the launch. It will be a real credit to both our business and the industry if we can get just as many qualified in 2013.”
