MITIE increases share of PFI Schools market with first Building Schools for the Future contract

MITIE, the strategic outsourcing and asset management company, has secured a 31- year contract to deliver total facilities management to three new PFI schools in Kent.

MITIE will be working for Land Securities Trillium who is leading a consortium of partners in completely rebuilding or substantially refurbishing the first 10 secondary schools in Kent’s extensive BSF programme. The £600 million deal is a major milestone for the county’s drive to combine significant investment in state-of-the-art buildings and ICT facilities, with a bold educational vision to transform teaching and learning, putting schools at the heart of their community.

The contract award for MITIE confirms its position as the largest provider of facilities management services to PFI schools in the UK. Initial works on the contract will be worth in excess of £40m and with a further eight PFI schemes likely to be added to the contract, it is expected that the overall contract value will increase substantially.

MITIE have the exclusive rights to deliver facilities management to the schools, which will include the overall management and helpdesk, engineering and building fabric maintenance, security and all soft services comprising caretaking, cleaning, catering and grounds maintenance.

This is the first award as part of a substantial bidding programme for MITIE within the BSF market. MITIE is currently selected bidder on Newham Building Schools for the Future programme and is short listed for a further two similar contracts.

Patrick Stirland, Managing Director for MITIE’s facilities management business commented: “We are delighted to have had the opportunity to work with our partners to bring our extensive experience in PFI and the education sector in securing our first BSF contract. MITIE’s partnering ethos will ensure that value for money and performance improvement objectives will provide ongoing benefits to the Council, schools and pupils.”

Editor’s notes

What is MITIE?
We’re the strategic outsourcing and asset management company.

What does that mean in practice? Providing everything from strategic consultancy, to world-class delivery on the ground. From long-term infrastructure planning, to facilities management, property and engineering services. Our strategic input can add value at the highest level, while our practical management expertise can save customers money and maximise their returns.

At the same time, it’s not just what we do, but how we do it that makes us different. Our people are passionate about what they do, committed to working in partnership with their clients, and will always look for a fresh answer to a new challenge.

We work with our clients in three ways; some take full advantage of our whole range of expertise by buying the whole suite, others may only need one aspect of what we do:

Strategy and consultancy

+ Facilities and project management

+ Service delivery

In other words, we think, we manage, and we deliver.

The thinking phase is all about finding strategic answers to long-term challenges about assets and resources. Facilities and project management puts those plans in place, and our unrivalled range of services is one of the best in the business.

There’s a lot more to MITIE than you probably think. We’re a big company with big ambitions - a leading FTSE 250 support services business, with 49,000+ people, revenues in excess of £1.4bn, and a reputation for being the best.
