Mitie helps Network Rail achieve Carbon Trust Standard for Waste

Network Rail, under the management of Mitie, the facilities management company, has become one of the first organisations in the transport sector to be awarded the Carbon Trust Standard for Waste certification for all of its UK corporate offices and training centres.

The Carbon Trust Standard for Waste provides a framework for organisations to measure, manage and reduce their waste outputs year-on-year, with independent verification of actual progress. Thanks to Mitie, Network Rail was awarded a particularly high score in the qualitative waste management assessment conducted as part of the certification, putting the business in the top 10 percent of all organisations assessed by the Carbon Trust.

The qualitative assessment analysed Network Rail’s waste performance across various areas, including policy, communication, completeness of data, targets, investment programmes and employee and supply chain engagement. A separate quantitative assessment found that Network Rail had also improved its waste management by moving waste streams up the hierarchy in two ways - reducing the volume of waste sent to landfill and increasing the percentage of waste being recycled.

The excellent result can be attributed to a range of ongoing initiatives, including employee training, waste roadshows, newsletters, waste minimisation strategy and targets, supply chain engagement, waste reduction during projects, and monthly tonnage reports compiled by Mitie that represent best practice in waste accounting.

The waste management strategy and Carbon Trust certification process was overseen by Duncan Rutter, Sustainable Development Manager for Mitie’s integrated facilities management contract at Network Rail.

Duncan said: “This is an excellent achievement, demonstrating our best in class performance. We’re continually focused on moving Network Rail further up the waste hierarchy and have implemented a comprehensive waste management strategy across the UK.

“Our waste account manager has helped steer the strategy and daily operations, while providing excellent waste tonnage data and reports. This allowed us to focus on the strategic objectives, which has been fundamental to us achieving the accreditation.”

Robert Armstrong, Network Rail Safety and Sustainability Manager said: “We’re delighted to have achieved the Carbon Trust Standard for Waste, which demonstrates our excellent performance in this area. This can be put down to our partnership approach with Mitie and the hard work by everyone involved.”
