MITIE helping to improve Edinburgh’s city centre

MITIE, the strategic outsourcing and asset management company, is helping the world famous city of Edinburgh to be even cleaner and friendlier. MITIE has won a contract with Essential Edinburgh, the city centre’s Business Improvement District (BID) company, to improve the city’s visitor perception and make it more environmentally friendly.

Essential Edinburgh wants to ensure that visitors to the city centre - whether shoppers, tourists or others – have a positive experience. For this to happen there will be cleaning teams and ambassadors based in the city that will make a real difference on a day-to-day basis. MITIE won the competitive tender process to help launch this innovative city service that is funded by hundreds of city centre businesses.

In principle, the ambassadors will provide a customer service function for people visiting the area, as well as monitoring the state of the street environment and assisting with the management of any BID events. They will also help promote and support public safety and security, working with the Council’s CCTV team and the police, helping to deter crime and anti-social behaviour.

The clean teams will have specialist equipment to focus on issues such as the removal of chewing gum, graffiti removal and illegal fly-posting as well as additional litter-picking.

Laraine McBean, director of MITIE’s cleaning business in Scotland said: “We’re delighted to have won this contract and we’re really looking forward to building on the relationship with Essential Edinburgh. Our people will be in the public eye and so we’ve chosen the right calibre of people with local knowledge to help visitors to the city.”

Jane Wood from Essential Edinburgh said: “MITIE was the right company we were looking for, they share similar vision and values to us and we’re both keen for this initiative to be successful. There is pressure on us to get it right and working with a professional company like MITIE will allow us to exceed that expectation.”

Notes for editors

What is MITIE?
We’re the strategic outsourcing and asset management company.

What does that mean in practice? Providing everything from strategic consultancy, to world-class delivery on the ground. From long-term infrastructure planning, to facilities management, property and engineering services. Our strategic input can add value at the highest level, while our practical management expertise can save customers money and maximise their returns.

At the same time, it’s not just what we do, but how we do it that makes us different. Our people are passionate about what they do, committed to working in partnership with their clients, and will always look for a fresh answer to a new challenge.

We work with our clients in three ways; some take full advantage of our whole range of expertise by buying the whole suite, others may only need one aspect of what we do:

Strategy and consultancy

+ Facilities and project management

+ Service delivery

In other words, we think, we manage, and we deliver.

The thinking phase is all about finding strategic answers to long-term challenges about assets and resources. Facilities and project management puts those plans in place, and our unrivalled range of services is one of the best in the business.

There’s a lot more to MITIE than you probably think. We’re a big company with big ambitions - a leading FTSE 250 support services business, with 49,000+ people, revenues in excess of £1.4bn, and a reputation for being the best.
