Mitie goes for gold with top CO2 reduction rating

  • Mitie awarded Gold Certificate by Masternaut for its achievements in reducing fleet CO2 emissions
  • 770 tonnes of carbon saved in 2018 as a result of Mitie’s fleet initiatives
  • Mitie has committed to transitioning 20% of its small van and car fleet to electric by 2020 – this will save a further 4,000 tonnes of CO2 a year

Mitie has been recognised for its success in reducing the carbon emissions of its fleet, by being awarded Gold Certification by Masternaut. Across its whole fleet, Mitie cut CO2 by 770 tonnes – the equivalent to planting almost 800 trees.

Mitie has achieved this impressive saving through a range of fleet initiatives to help cut its carbon footprint. This has included the introduction of a new Driver Risk Management Framework, to improve driver behaviour and offer training to encourage the most fuel-efficient driving, as well as the installation of speed limiters across its commercial vehicles.

Over the year, Mitie has also moved to more fuel-efficient models in order to reduce fuel consumption and emissions, subsequently announcing an industry-leading commitment to move 20% of its car and small van fleet to 100% electric models by 2020. This commitment alone will see Mitie cut its CO2 emissions by a further 4,000 tonnes a year – the equivalent to planting enough trees to cover twice the size of Sherwood Forest. The business has also pledged to switch every company vehicle to an electric model by 2030* – with its fleet responsible for 93% of Mitie’s CO2 emissions, this will have a massive impact on the company’s overall carbon footprint.

Independently verified by the Energy Savings Trust, Masternaut’s Fleet CO2 Certification is calculated by analysing telematics data from each vehicle in the Mitie Fleet, to track fuel consumption and how much CO2 is emitted over the year, compared to the previous 12 months.

Simon King, Fleet and Procurement Director, Mitie, said:

“It’s gratifying to see our holistic view to CO2 reduction, ranging from the vehicles we choose to how we train our drivers, recognised by Masternaut with this Gold certification. With our commitment to switch 20% of our car and small van fleet to electric by 2020, I’m excited to be building on these already impressive carbon savings in 2019.”

Notes to editors

To achieve Masternaut’s gold status, a business must see at least a 5% reduction in its fleet CO2 emissions each year.
