A new energy centre which will save more than £600,000 and almost halve carbon emissions every year is being installed at the Royal Marsden Hospital in Sutton.
The combined heat and power plant, which will make the hospital more energy efficient, will be developed and operated by MITIE’s Asset Management business. The economic savings to the hospital are equivalent to hiring 18 new nurses a year.
The plant, which will replace the hospital’s ageing steam energy system, uses a gas engine to generate heat and power, reducing the need to buy energy from the grid.
MITIE, which is the preferred bidder for the project, has also recently been accepted as a partner in the NHS Carbon and Energy Fund. This enables Trusts to upgrade their energy infrastructure to save energy, carbon and money by providing the funding, legal and technical expertise. MITIE is already working with the Royal Free hospital in Hampstead to improve their energy provision.
Mike Tivey, managing director of MITIE’s Asset Management Division, said: “This project highlights the huge benefits of generating your own energy – meaning the Royal Marsden can achieve significant economic savings, cut carbon emissions and meet and exceed their NHS carbon targets.”
The new plant, which will be installed by summer 2012, will also produce excess energy which could be used to supply neighbouring amenities on the hospital site.
