Mitie gains official recognition from the Department of Health for best practice in waste management

Mitie's award winning waste management contract at University College London has been used to illustrate best practice in the latest Department of Health waste guidance document.

Mitie, the FTSE 250 strategic outsourcing and energy services company, gained official recognition from the Department of Health, when the award winning waste management contract at University College London (UCL) was used to illustrate best practice in the latest Department of Health waste guidance document.

The 82-page document, called “Safe Management of Healthcare Waste” was revised in April 2012 and used the waste management contract at University College London (UCL) as a case study to describe how the innovative approach changed behaviour, delivered monthly savings of over £5K, and generated a reduction in carbon output of 16% over a three-year period.

Mitie and UCL won the Chartered Institute of Waste Management CIWM award for innovation in resource recovery and waste management in October 2011, and are proud to gain further recognition from the Department of Health.

Andy Stratton, Mitie’s healthcare waste specialist said:

“Mitie is leading the way in managing healthcare waste and I hope that this official recognition will help some NHS Trusts spot the opportunity. In the current climate, this is one area where Trusts can save money, while actually improving the service and environmental performance.”

Paul Monk, waste technician at UCL said:

"I'm delighted that UCL has been included in the new guidance. It is acknowledgement for the progress that has been made in the last three years and demonstrates that by engaging with all stakeholders, real financial and environmental benefits can be achieved. It also recognises innovation in healthcare waste, which I believe is overlooked.”

Mitie sees the future of waste being innovation-driven, focusing on cost savings and sustainability through a flexible approach which changes to fit with client and industry requirements, as well as updates to legislation and technology.
