Mitie embarks on a new journey with South Western Railway

  • New three-year contract with South Western Railway (SWR) covering engineering maintenance and repairs for over 200 stations and a further ten train depots from Waterloo to Weymouth
  • Sustainability will play a central role throughout the contract, with Mitie deploying its Plan Zero experts to identify and deliver carbon cutting initiatives
  • As well as building on its existing intelligence-led security contract with SWR, this contract demonstrates further growth for Mitie’s rail transport business, which counts over ten train operating companies as customers

Mitie has been awarded a new three-year contract with South Western Railway (SWR), with the option to extend for two additional years. The contract covers a range of maintenance services including preventative maintenance, reactive and emergency repairs and project works at over 200 stations – including SWR’s hub which is located at London Waterloo, the country’s largest and busiest station – and ten train depots across the SWR network.

Mitie’s ‘Plan Zero’ consultancy team will also identify opportunities for energy and carbon reduction helping SWR to achieve its goal of being a net zero railway by 2040.

Transporting 220,000 passengers each day, the SWR network provides services in South West London and Southern parts of England including Hampshire, Surrey, Berkshire and Wiltshire, as well as Island Line services on the Isle of Wight.

These engineering services are in addition to an existing contract with SWR providing intelligence-led security services across the network. As part of the existing contract, Mitie has already fully digitised SWR’s security incident reporting process, as well as using open-source data gathering to provide updates on potential threats and identify crime hotspots.

The new contract also demonstrates further growth for Mitie’s rail transport business, which counts over ten train operating companies as customers, including Great Western Railway and TransPennine.

As part of the contract, 24 colleagues will join Mitie and will be entitled to enhanced benefits including a virtual GP service, life assurance and free shares.

Andy Thompson, Managing Director, Technical FM, Mitie said:

“As the operator of some of the most popular rail routes in the UK, we’re proud to be extending our partnership with South Western Railway. As well as ensuring that repairs are pre-empted and responded to quickly, we’re also looking forward to bringing our emissions reduction expertise to help South Western Railway achieve it 2040 net zero target.”

Alistair Wright, Head of Infrastructure & Property for South Western Railway, said:

“We are pleased to expand our partnership with Mitie and look forward to working with them to help maintain our stations and depots and deliver our pledge to become net zero by 2040.”
