MITIE, the strategic outsourcing company, has been awarded a facilities management contract with Manchester Airport Plc. The new five-year, multi-million pound contract commenced on 1 September 2010. Approximately 300 employees have transferred to MITIE from the previous incumbent who had been in place for the past 24 years.
The services involved in the contract include terminal cleaning, car park and road sweeps, internal waste management and winterisation (preparing the airport for the onset of winter each year). MITIE was awarded the contract due to its commitment to culture change, its flexibility and the quality of its aviation management.
As part of the contract, MITIE has signed up to Manchester Airport’s Customer Services Standards programme, which it runs in association with its service partners. Sarah Barrett, Group Head of Customer Experience, said: “We want to recognise the top achievers for all of our service partners. To help us reach our customer service targets we need buy-in from everybody that work at the airport and that is why we have inserted the standards into our business contracts. We have completed the majority of building work so our focus is now on our people to ensure they understand where our vision and goals.”
Sarah continued: “We will be working closely with MITIE to tailor its training programmes for its people. We have our own desire to be the leading airport for customer service and if our service partners share that goal then it will make the journey even easier. I’m delighted that MITIE has signed up to our Customer Service Standards programme.”
This contract adds to MITIE’s considerable portfolio of work in the aviation sector where it provides a range of facilities management and fit-out services to airports across the country.
Johan Venter, MITIE’s Director of transport cleaning, is delighted with the new contract: “Manchester Airport is very important for us and demonstrates the confidence that a major international airport has in our technical and logistical abilities. This is a welcome addition to our portfolio and we look forward to a successful partnership.”

What is MITIE?
We’re the strategic outsourcing company. What does that mean in practice? We manage facilities, properties and assets for our clients across the UK and beyond.
We work with our clients in three ways; some take full advantage of our whole range of expertise, others may only need one aspect of what we do:
Strategy and consultancy
+ Facilities and project management
+ Service delivery
Our strategic input can add value at the highest level by helping clients to manage their assets, while our practical management expertise can save customers money and reduce their carbon emissions. We work with a vast number of clients in every industry across both the public and private sectors and deliver the broadest range of services that can be found in one place: from integrated facilities management to engineering maintenance to lifecycle energy management and much more.
There’s a lot more to MITIE than you probably think. We’re a big company with big ambitions – a leading FTSE 250 support services business, with more than 56,000 people, revenues in excess of £1.7bn, and a reputation for being the best.
