MITIE and Industrial Solar complete first commercial solar power ‘for free’ installation

MITIE, the FTSE250 strategic outsourcing company, working with funding partner Industrial Solar has completed its first solar power ‘for free’ installation project.

The project involved installing of photovoltaic (PV) roof mounted panels that use solar cells to convert energy from the sun into electricity. The installation is provided to the building owner MGM Trading for free, with Industrial Solar recouping the costs. MGM Trading is a prestigious conservatory furniture manufacturer from Burton On Trent.

The installation will mean lower electricity bills for MGM Trading and reduced carbon emissions. The four-week project was completed in April and delivered through MITIE’s CarbonCare services, helping organisations to manage down their energy use and carbon footprint. This system will produce 57,000kWh of renewable electricity each year and offset 30,000kg of carbon dioxide every year – the equivalent of 40 flights between London and New York City.

The project is fully funded by Industrial Solar, a commercial developer within the renewables PV market, which leases the roof space for 25 years from the building owner, MGM Trading. Industrial Solar will receive income from feed-in-tariffs and for any excess energy generated by the panels, while MGM trading will enjoy lower electricity bills and green power.

Ed Sloane, Director of MGM Trading, a conservatory furniture company commented: “We’re delighted to be working with Industrial Solar and MITIE on this project. It’s a win-win situation for us. The PV solar panels are not only lowering our electricity bills but we’re also reducing our carbon emissions and receiving an income from the rental of our roof space.”

Nigel Price, Director of Industrial Solar said, “We have secured a considerable fund from leading City investors to install PV solar panels for commercial organisations whose properties have a suitable roof. We’re delighted with the results of our first project with MITIE and look forward to expanding this opportunity to other organisations in the commercial sector.”

Peter Griffin, Director of MITIE’s Property Management business added, “This is a great project for MITIE to be involved in and demonstrates our expertise in this emerging sector. The scheme has great benefits for organisations and helps care for the environment by preventing greenhouse gases.”

MITIE offers a range of integrated energy management services from design to installation through its CarbonCare offering.

What is MITIE?
We’re the strategic outsourcing company. What does that mean in practice? We manage facilities, properties and assets for our clients across the UK and beyond.

We work with our clients in three ways; some take full advantage of our whole range of expertise, others may only need one aspect of what we do:

Strategy and consultancy
+ Facilities and project management
+ Service delivery

Our strategic input can add value at the highest level by helping clients to manage their assets, while our practical management expertise can save customers money and reduce their carbon emissions. We work with a vast number of clients in every industry across both the public and private sectors and deliver the broadest range of services that can be found in one place: from integrated facilities management to engineering maintenance to lifecycle energy management and much more.

There’s a lot more to MITIE than you probably think. We’re a big company with big ambitions – a leading FTSE 250 support services business, with more than 56,000 people, revenues in excess of £1.7bn, and a reputation for being the best.
