Mitie’s social care business, Mihomecare, has secured a five-year contract with Devon County Council and two Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs), worth £7m over its term.
To help support the new contract, MiHomecare yesterday opened an office in Okehampton, welcoming members of the community, existing and prospective care users, and those interested in a career with MiHomecare.
Devon County Council’s Vice Chairman, Councillor Rose Rowe, who officially opened the office, commented:
“Over the last two years, Devon County Council, working with our NHS partners, has been designing a new service called 'Living Well at Home'. We call it that because we want people to lead lives that are as full as possible, even when they need that bit of extra help.
"MiHomecare will organise the delivery of care and support in the home, 365 days a year, for people whom the Council and NHS have assessed as needing support.
Councillor Kevin Ball, who also attended the opening, added:
"This is great news for Okehampton. Demand for care in people's own homes is continuing to grow, and I'm pleased that the Council's new contracts promote better working arrangements for care workers.
"MiHomecare's new offices in Okehampton represent an opportunity for people to pursue a very much valued career in the care industry."
On behalf of the three commissioning authorities, Devon County Council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for adult social care, Councillor Stuart Barker said:
“Good quality community-based care is essential to help support vulnerable people to live independently at home for longer. Our new contracts are an important step in helping to improve the quality and supply of personal care services, and to bring greater pride in the sector.
“Care workers do a really important job for the people of Devon and we are investing more into these contracts to ensure that they will be paid for all the hours they work including travelling time and that they receive at least the national living wage. It will also encourage support and training for staff to ensure a good supply of quality care services for the future.
“MiHomecare is a key partner in helping us to deliver better services, and by working closely with the many existing local providers we hope they can help us to drive improvement, increase efficiency and boost supply across the county.”
Narinder Singh, Managing Director of MiHomecare said:
“I’m delighted that we’re working in partnership with Devon’s health and social care authorities to deliver quality care in the area. It’s great that we’re expanding our service provision to Okehampton and Moretonhampstead and in doing so that we can offer new job opportunities for local people.”
