Ruby McGregor-Smith CBE, the CEO of FTSE 250 strategic outsourcing company Mitie, has called on business to do more to help disabled people secure employment and reach their full potential.
Speaking today at the Disability Employment Conference (DEC) in London, Mrs. McGregor-Smith said that senior management and boards should do more to drive cultural change and share best practice with other organisations.
The event aimed to bring business and government together to identify the challenges facing disabled people, marking the start of a two year campaign to increase their participation in the workforce.
Ruby McGregor-Smith discussed how Mitie is passionate about diversity and equality. She said:
“Disabled people play an important role in both Mitie and across the UK economy, but if we are serious about supporting disabled people in business we need to increase our focus on removing the cultural, physical and logistical obstacles that prevent them from reaching their full potential.
“Change will only occur if there is support and understanding at every level of management that diversity is good for business, which is why business leaders must champion this cultural change. By challenging the status quo we can not only improve British business, but the quality of people’s lives.”
