Each year the Association for Security Professionals working in Universities, Colleges and Institutions of Higher and Further Education (AUCSO), recognises security excellence through the Security Officer of the Year award.
Mitie security officers Andy Newton and Ken Conlin both from the Durham University security team scooped the award for their dedication and professionalism when detaining two youths under extremely demanding circumstances. The award was presented by Roger Morgan AUCSO Chair during the gala evening of the AUCSO awards on the 12 April 2013.
On 24 November 2012 Durham security control received a call of a break in taking place at one of University’s buildings. Officers Andy and Ken were despatched, upon arrival they were confronted by a group of youths causing significant damage to the building. A number of them quickly ran off when they spotted the security team, however two perpetrators were detained.
This location is a very isolated area and detaining the two youths put the officers at risk; Andy and Ken made several calls for assistance from the police but had to wait a considerable amount of time for their arrival. In the meantime the group of youths that had previously ran, returned, surrounding the two officers and made threats to them, demanding the release of their friends. Our officers ignored their threats as the situation became increasingly dangerous, they managed to keep the two detained youths until the police arrived.
The perpetrators were arrested for offences of criminal damage to University property. It was later reported by the police that these two offenders had been on the police wanted list for a number of months and would now be charged with further offences.
AUCSO recognised that Andy and Ken had gone over and above the call of duty, never once considering the personal risk they were putting themselves in. Both officers were universally praised by the Durham security supervisor and the local police with the way they conducted themselves in this potentially dangerous situation.
