Mitie’s Midlands Hub in Bickenhill, Birmingham, has been officially opened by Andy Street, Mayor of the West Midlands. As well as acting as the base for Mitie’s Central Government & Defence business, the site is also home to its state-of-the-art Cleaning and Hygiene Centre of Excellence (CHCE), which showcases the latest science, technology, and innovation in the cleaning industry.

A key feature of Mitie’s presence in the West Midlands, the Cleaning and Hygiene Centre of Excellence brings together and trials the latest sector innovations – from robotics and UV technology through to enzyme cleaning products. With 15,000 colleagues providing essential cleaning services for a broad range of customers, including hospitals, schools, manufacturing sites, retailers, and corporate workspaces, Mitie’s award-winning Cleaning business is the largest in the UK.

Mitie is a major employer in the West Midlands, with over 3,800 colleagues working in the region – 300 of which from across Mitie’s business are based in the Midlands Hub. The business also employs around 70 apprentices, completing a range of courses including Security Supervisor, Fire & Security, Engineering and Electrical Installation. Mitie also looks after many workspaces and iconic locations across the Greater Birmingham area, including Birmingham Airport, Birmingham New Street railway station, Russells Hall Hospital, Amazon and The Bullring Shopping Centre.

In line with Mitie’s Plan Zero commitment to reach net zero carbon emissions for its operations by 2025, the Birmingham workspace is a net zero office, powered and heated with renewable electricity. 22 electric vehicle charge points are installed in the site’s car park, with Mitie installing a new transformer to support the future scale up of charge points.

Phil Bentley, Chief Executive Officer, Mitie, said:

“As one of Britain’s biggest businesses, we’re proud to be strengthening our connection to the region with our Midlands Hub. Home not just to hundreds of colleagues, but also our state-of-the-art Cleaning and Hygiene Centre of Excellence, we’re leading our industry with the latest in technology, innovation, education, and training, all under one roof in the heart of the West Midlands.”

Andy Street, Mayor of the West Midlands, said:

“As a major local employer in our region, it was important to mark the official opening of Mitie’s Midlands Hub in Birmingham.

“It’s great to see the level of investment Mitie are putting into skills, technology and innovation.

“And now – thanks to their rather unique Cleaning and Hygiene Centre of Excellence – they’re supporting 3,800 jobs for local people. Long may that continue.”
