Interserve praised for facilities management work delivered to support West Yorkshire Police

West Yorkshire Police has praised Interserve for delivering excellent facilities management (FM) services that have supported the force to maintain operations during the challenges created by COVID-19.

Interserve’s Communities and International business unit has a PFI contract with West Yorkshire Police which involves 78 colleagues working at two Police Headquarters that also have a custody suite, and a Police Training Centre.

The business unit specialises in providing services to healthcare, educational and emergency services. Clients include the London Ambulance Service, 11 NHS Hospital Trusts and 150 schools. Through the delivery of high-quality hard and soft FM services to key sectors, Community and International has acquired considerable expertise in relation to limiting risks posed by COVID-19.

That experience has been used to inform how the team at West Yorkshire Police undertake their work. Services delivered include contract management, helpdesk, cleaning, estates management – which includes planned and reactive maintenance and lifecycle works – landscaping and pest control services.

During the pandemic, the team not only successfully managed to maintain services but has delivered extra support. Additional services include frequently cleaning touch points, a fortnightly cleanse of each building, refilling hand sanitisers and developing specialist teams to clean cells where people suspected of having COVID-19 were held.

Nigel Brook, Assistant Chief Officer West Yorkshire Police, wrote to Interserve’s team to praise them for the work undertaken during recent months.

Assistant Chief Officer Mr Brook said: “Thank you for the efforts of you and your team through this testing period. The importance of keeping our buildings functioning has been vital to our police response and your staffs’ efforts have been deeply appreciated.

“We welcome how you have responded to a number of challenges and proved a willingness to adapt to ensure buildings remain clean and available in all areas.”

Martin Burholt, Managing Director of Communities and International, said: “I am delighted Mr Brook has taken the time to praise our team – ably led by Account Director, Angela Walton – for the fantastic work they have undertaken during the pandemic.

“We excel at delivering critical FM services to the emergency services to ensure they are freed up to do what they do best. A perfect example is our work carried out to keep the police custody suites open.

“We adopted our own measures, agreed with the Police, that included disinfecting cells which potentially housed people with COVID-19 with a spray before a colleague wearing full Personnel Protective Equipment would then enter an hour later to carry out a methodical clean. All materials used in the process were then correctly disposed. We used all of our own kit and developed training sessions to ensure safety was of the highest standard.”
