Interserve employee moves away from home to protect old and young

Interserve Team Leader Alex Hall is going the extra mile during the Covid-19 pandemic: he has moved out of his family home to enable him to keep protecting the elderly patients in the hospital where he works, as well as his five-year-old son who has a heart condition.

Alex Hall is responsible for 24 colleagues who deliver cleaning and facilities management services to the North East London NHS Foundation Trust (NELFT) and has been praised for his dedication during the response to COVID-19.

The 34-year-old has temporarily moved away from his family home so that he can protect his son Jamie, because the five-year-old has a heart condition and is classed as being high-risk.

Alex Hall, from Basildon, has been away from home for three-months. In addition, he has taken on extra shifts and worked weekends to ensure the service Interserve delivers to the wards he is responsible for remains of the highest standard.

The team provides cleaning and catering services and carries out regular deep cleans to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Colleagues have also provided services to patients who contracted coronavirus.

One of the wards that Alex Hall’s team works on is for elderly patients who have conditions ranging from dementia through to stroke recovery.

Alex Hall said: “It’s an incredibly difficult time for everyone, but the impact on the elderly in hospitals and care homes is especially tough. I am therefore proud of the work my team is undertaking in often challenging circumstances to support the NHS Trust and the patients who are being cared for.

“Patients want to talk. Often their relatives are not allowed to visit. If we can improve their spirits by taking the time to chat and take an interest, then that’s fantastic.

“Clearly our primary aim is to ensure the premises are as clean as possible so that the hospital staff, patients and ourselves are safe. We carry out deep cleans to ensure the spread of COVID-19 is restricted. We’ve got the goggles, aprons and gloves and our expertise. It’s something we take extremely seriously.”

Alex Hall regularly visits his wife and son and talks to them from a safe distance from the garden.

Alex Hall said: “It’s hard. I miss them both terribly. But it was the right thing to do because it means I can keep Jamie safe while making sure that my team delivers the best possible service.”

He added: “I think that clapping for frontline staff is so well-deserved, the work that nurses, cleaners, porters and everyone involved in the response to COVID-19 is doing are risking their lives and their commitment deserves to be recognised.”

A spokesperson for NELFT said: “We are all working hard as part of our response to COVID-19 and are impressed by the efforts to which Mr Hall and all his team have gone to in order to ensure Interserve’s services continue to be delivered.”

Ricky Franks, Interserve’s Deputy Contract Manager, praised Alex Hall and his team of 24 colleagues who are part of the company’s team delivering services to NELFT NHS Trust.

He said: “All of those involved in providing FM and cleaning services deserve enormous credit, but Alex in-particular has really excelled and shown true grit and dedication.

“Alex is always on-hand to assist anywhere and everywhere to ensure the business continues. He has directly overseen and conducted COVID-19 cleans and has volunteered to be on our on-call coronavirus clean service.

“And to cap it all he has moved away from his family to keep his son safe. His commitment is second to none.”
