Interserve’s Abdel Elaabdi leads a team of people dedicated to ensuring the capital’s ambulances are in the best possible condition to support London Ambulance Service’s response to COVID-19.
The company has operated a Make Ready contract for London Ambulance Service for a number of years. Interserve’s teams work out of strategically located sites across the capital where ambulance vehicles are audited, cleaned and properly stocked with all the right equipment. The preparation work helps ensure vehicles can get back on the road as quickly, safely and efficiently as possible so that the medics can respond to Londoners in need.
Abdel, Head Operations Manager, and his decontamination team is based at London’s Nightingale Hospital, at the ExCel Centre.
The father-of-two, from Hackney, said: “I’m doing this job because it’s the right thing to do. This is my legacy. When my children ask me ‘what did you do during the pandemic dad?’ I’ll be able to talk with pride about what I did.
“I am genuinely enjoying the work. We have the right equipment, we are all part of a team and here to do our best.”
Two colleagues work on each ambulance. One colleague is responsible for the vehicle’s interior and uses three carefully planned and complimentary processes: chlorine, an electrostatic gun and finally an ultraviolet ray. A second colleague works outside the ambulance, cleaning and replacing equipment handed to them. The process takes a minimum of 30-minutes.
Abdel said: “We use three methods, it’s a triple-check. That way any chance of human error is removed.
“We meticulously clean all the major touch points, the ceiling, every surface and every item in the ambulance. Each item is double-bagged so that if it is not used by the medics, all we need do is replace the outer bag.
“I am immensely proud of my colleagues. We are totally committed to ensuring the ambulances are in the best possible shape to save lives and protect the health of our wonderful medics.”
Justin Wand, Director of Strategic Assets and Property at London Ambulance Service, said:
“Interserve provide critical support to our frontline operation through our Make Ready service – this is a quality assured, patient safety vehicle preparation programme. It’s designed to maximise vehicle and equipment availability and minimise the risk of cross infection.
“The commitment of the whole team has been outstanding, and I would like to personally thank Abdel and his colleagues for their hard work. Undoubtedly, our frontline staff and patients appreciate all the work that Interserve do – especially during this challenging time.”
Interserve provides services to 11 NHS hospitals, six healthcare facilities, London Ambulance Service and the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service. Services the company delivers range from security through to cleaning, catering, maintenance and portering duties.
