Mitie, the facilities management company, has been working with Golding Homes, a non-profit housing association and Garden Organic, the UK's leading organic growing charity, to support the build of a new community garden in Kent.

Supported by Mitie’s Property Management business, the community garden will become a central point for members of the local community including residents of Walshaw House and Telford House in Maidstone.

Mitie has helped out by donating paint and tools to the project and materials were also provided by project partner Travis Perkins.

Local people of all ages have been busy planting a variety of flowers and vegetables in raised beds, nurturing young plants in controlled environments and painting the new shed. Garden Organic will also be running weekly sessions to encourage members of the community to get involved in the garden and share skills on growing plants.

Mitie is currently working in partnership with Golding Homes as part of a 10 year repair and maintenance contract to support the housing association’s upkeep of 6,000 properties across Kent.

Sarah Leipnik, Golding Homes Community Development Advisor, said:“Gardening is a great way to bring neighbours together, and at the same time is good for our physical and mental health. Sharing the produce is an added bonus.”

Peter Griffin, Director of Housing, added: “It’s so important that our teams get the opportunity to down tools for a day and get involved in great community projects such as this. We’re working closely with our partners to invest in community-led initiatives and develop ways that we can further the advancement of local people through a range of training and development events.”
