The facilities in St Andrew’s Precinct in Droitwich were crowned Best Public Toilets in England, and the UK, during an awards ceremony in Solihull on Friday, 8 December 2017.
Run by the British Toilet Association, the awards encourage the highest possible standards in all ‘away from home’ washrooms, scoring them on a range of factors, including cleanliness, safety and hygiene. A range of organisations including councils, hotels and shopping centres all take part in the annual competition.
Inspectors pay a visit to each toilet before issuing a bronze, silver, gold or platinum rating. Overall, Wychavon’s eleven public loos were awarded seven platinum and four gold awards. This strong performance meant Wychavon District Council kept its place in the ‘Champions League of Loos’, made up of organisations who consistently maintain their toilets to the highest standards.

Mitie mobile operatives service all eleven loos, seven days a week, 364 days a year; closing only on Christmas Day. The team looks after the daily cleaning, locking and unlocking of each of the facilities. Mitie and Wychavon District Council have been in partnership since 1995, with the council recently awarding a five-year contract extension to 2022.
Matthew Thompson, Managing Director of Mitie’s cleaning business, said:
“This is a fantastic achievement for the cleaning team. It rewards an excellent partnership founded on hard work and dedication to keep the toilets in Wychavon District Council serviced to the highest possible standard. I would like to congratulate the whole team associated with Wychavon for this great award.”
